The principles of Yogasanas

Asanas are an important part of yoga practice. That's why there are some special rules for doing them. The expected benefits are obtained from the asanas only if done according to the rules. Lord Krishna says in the Gita.

Yuktaaharviharasya yukta chestasya karmasu.

Yuktswapnavabodhasya yogo bhavati dukhaha. ( 6 /17)

That is, this yoga that destroys sorrows is proved by him only. Whose diet, daily routine (vihaar) is balanced and his daily activities are tactful, and whose sleep and wakefulness are balanced. The meaning of saying is that yoga is proved only when it is done regularly. Similarly, it is also necessary to pay attention to some essential principles while doing asanas.  Whose brief description is as follows?

Principles of Yoga Asanas

1. Yogasana should be done only at a pure and holy place. There should be no dust, smoke, foul smell etc. in the place where Yogasanas are performed.

2. Asanas should always be done on an empty stomach. If it is to be done after having food, then it should be done at least after about four hours.

3. It is better to practice Yogasanas in the morning because the atmosphere is calm and pure at that time. It can also be practiced in the evening.

4. Asanas should never be practiced quickly. Rather, it should be practiced slowly in a rhythmic manner.

5. Those suffering from difficult diseases or those who have undergone surgery should not do asanas immediately. Pregnant women should also not practice asanas after three months. One should not do asanas even when menstruating. Asanas should be done only after three months of delivery.

6. Simple asanas should be done in the beginning. Then slowly one should practice difficult asanas.

7. If you go to the backward bending position while doing asanas, you should go while breathing. And while bending forward, one should bend forward while exhaling.

8. Asanas should always be done with equanimity. That is, if one asana is done in front bending, then after that one should do backward bending asana. If left bending asana is done, then right bending asana should be done after that.

9. The sweat coming out of the body while doing the asana should not be wiped off, rather it should be dried by rubbing it with the hands.

10. After doing asanas, complete rest should be done through shavasana etc. so that physical fatigue can be removed.

11. One should not take bath or eat immediately after doing asana, but should take bath or eat only after at least half an hour.

Just as some principles are followed while doing asanas. Similarly, some preparation is also required before doing asanas. which is described as

Preparation before doing asana

1. A pure, holy and flat place should be selected for doing asana.

2. A blanket or a thick carpet should be spread over it after spreading a rug for the seat.

3. Before asana, one should retire from defecation etc.

4. To do asanas, minimum clothes should be worn on the body and the clothes should be loose. Kurta pajama can be worn in winters.

5. Before doing asanas, it is necessary to have knowledge of the method of asanas. Yogasanas should be done only after learning from a qualified teacher.

Yogasanas done with prior preparation following the above-mentioned principles make the body healthy and suitable for spiritual practice.
